Our History

The Safety Council of Southwest Louisiana has been serving the Southwest Louisiana area for over fifty years. Originally, the Council was a chapter of the National Safety Council.  In 1999, we gave up our chapter status in order to better serve our customers and contain costs.

Today we are charter members of the American Association Of Safety Councils (AASC) and the Association of Reciprocal Safety Councils (ARSC). These organizations continue to grow each year with the simple objective of providing service and training to our respective communities to achieve accident prevention in the home, at work and at play.

Over the years, our community service projects have grown and we added a broad assortment of programs to support our local area courts and our Juvenile Justice Program.

In 1992, at the request of local industry, the council began providing orientation and training for local area contractor employees with the prime objective of containing costs and providing quality programs.  This led to formation of the Association Of Reciprocal Safety Councils.  ARSC has since grown to include over 25 councils across the United States and continues to expand the training base, and training programs to serve our industry with millions of dollars of savings each year.

Late in 2005, the Council added Solutions Employee Assistant Programs as a new business and service to our customers. Solutions EAP is a stand-alone business providing services to a cross section of businesses in Southwest Louisiana. The professionals of Solutions EAP have been integrated into our existing seminar base for providing such programs as our Supervisor Development Program, a newly developed Employee Intervention Program and Who Moved My Cheese plus several others. By joining the Safety Council, which is a non-profit 501C3 corporation, Solutions EAP is now able to offer services and benefits not available in the past.

In 2006, the council joined with two other Gulf Coast councils to form Safety Council Solutions, which provides a tabletop audit of contractor safety programs.  This process replaces a similar process previously offered by NCMS who decided to focus on their core business.

In January of 2007 the Safety Council will began administering a reciprocal Background Screening Program as a service to local Industry.

Through our 2007, and beyond, the Safety Council SWLA will maintain all existing services and add new programs to meet the needs of our customer base.  Whenever a need is identified, the Council will develop and provide quality, cost effective seminars, training and consulting to local business and the community. Site orientation development is now a cost effective benefit offered by the council as well as developing and managing the Human Resources training and data management for local business.

Benefits our Members Provide to SWLA

The Safety Council of Southwest Louisiana is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to cost effective services for our local industrial and contractor businesses. We also provide an Employee Assistance Program, Solutions EAP, to all area businesses.   Solutions EAP is able to provide a quality cost effective program to our area businesses in support of these businesses providing this important benefit to their employees. Our court programs provide cost effective training to court clients utilizing certified instructors and up to date information in a variety of areas. Overall, the council provides business services in many areas along with a strong community service program aimed at providing guidance for business, home, school and public safety.

The council, as a non-profit organization, utilizes income above operating expenses to support all of our programs and services. We elected, years ago, to not pursue outside funding such as the United Way as we feel there are other organizations, who provide much needed services to Southwest Louisiana, that do not have other income streams and we do not wish to dilute this pool of funds. Our services are quality driven, cost effective and are always provided by the best available professionals. Our member companies are proud, that their membership and program fees are utilized to help contain costs and to provide these service to our community.
